Research and Instruction
As a relatively small collection within the Harvard Library system, the Arnold Arboretum Horticultural Library and Archives’ success is the result of the quality, dedication, and special expertise of each staff member. Teamwork, cooperation, courtesy, and respect coupled with the wish to share information with those who seek it are the guiding principles of the Library and its staff.
Our library staff is pleased to assist you with reference consultations, introductions to library and archival materials, and interlibrary loan requests (for onsite use only).

We give Bibliographic Instruction sessions at least once each school semester. These sessions, which are open to the public, provide a brief overview of library and electronic resources such as HOLLIS, HOLLIS Classic, VIA, OASIS, and other useful databases. Session dates and times will be posted on our home page two weeks in advance. Sessions are free, but registration is required. Please e-mail us at hortlib@arnarb.harvard.edu.
We can also accommodate group visits when a research topic is submitted in advance via e-mail to hortlib@arnarb.harvard.edu.
Specific reference questions can be submitted via e-mail to hortlib@arnarb.harvard.edu. You may also phone us at 617.522.1086.
Use of the Library and Archives
The Arnold Arboretum Horticultural Library carefully regulates the use of materials in its collections. Policies governing access, photoduplication, and publication of these materials are established by the Library with the advice of the Harvard Office of General Counsel. This policy balances the needs of patrons, the rights of the copyright holder, and the Library’s rights and responsibilities towards its collections.
Please refer to our Services page if you wish to excerpt archival materials and / or images in a publication, performance, or broadcast.
