Like many students in the Harvard Extension School master’s degree program, my current field of study reflects an interest in changing careers. I am a CPA with an undergraduate degree in accounting from the University of Notre Dame. I currently work as a corporate accounting manager at a large multimedia company involved with trade magazines, trade shows, and online business ventures.

My great love of biology began in childhood. I was fortunate to grow up in the Panama Canal Zone, where I spent my free time diving the spectacular virgin coral reefs on the Caribbean side of the isthmus, and exploring the flora and fauna of the remarkable tropical rainforests of Panama. I was a regular at the Smithsonian and U.S. Army labs located there. I have the great fortune to be working on my thesis at the Arboretum with Ned Friedman. I am looking at trichome morphology and development, specifically in hops (Humulus lupulus) and related genera. There are a fascinating number of forms of similar (and non-similar) trichome hairs on these twining plants. Comparative study may yield some clues into the evolution of these highly effective defensive structures.
