As the director of operations I oversee the activities of the horticulture, greenhouse and nursery, and facilities departments that care for the Arnold Arboretum’s landscape and infrastructure. I also work closely with the curator of living collections to develop landscape management plans and strategies to ensure the long-term health of our plant collections. Additionally, I endeavor to maintain effective working relationships with local, state, and federal government agencies, local community organizations, and other University departments.
I began my career at the Arboretum as an intern while working towards a bachelor’s degree in biology at Northeastern University. After graduating in 2000, I joined the Arboretum staff as an apprentice and later became a full-time horticulturist. In 2004 I assumed responsibility for coordinating the Isabella Hunnewell Internship Program while acting as the assistant manager of horticulture, and began overseeing the entire horticulture maintenance operation as manager of horticulture in 2008. My current position affords me the opportunity to lead and work with many of the departments that support our world class collections of woody plants as well as our internship programs that help to prepare future generation for jobs in public horticulture.
I am a Massachusetts-certified Arborist and Commercial Pesticide Applicator, and I am a member of the Professional Grounds Management Society. In spring 2010, I received a master’s degree in sustainability and environmental management from the Harvard University Extension School.
