Traffic advisory issued as part of Casey Arborway Project

Massachusetts Department of Transportation

During the weekend of May 16 the Casey Arborway Overpass to the south of the main entrance of the Arnold Arboretum will close permanently. Demolition of the structure will begin during the week of May 18. In order to maintain access current traffic will be shifted to the temporary roadway that has been built to the north of the existing viaduct. Please reduce speed and exercise caution when traversing this and all work zones.

During demolition, westbound (towards Jamaica Pond and downtown Boston) traffic will travel along the temporary roadway from Shea Circle to the Arborway on-ramp at South Street. Right and left turns will be permitted at the intersections with Washington Street and South Street.

Eastbound (towards Franklin Park, Dorchester, and Mattapan) traffic will be split at the eastern (Arnold Arboretum) end of the Overpass. Traffic seeking to access South Street, Forest Hills Station, and points south such as Roslindale Square, will bear to the right, making a right turn onto South Street at the bottom of the ramp. Left turns onto South Street northbound will not be permitted.

Eastbound through traffic for Shea Circle, Hyde Park Avenue, West Roxbury Municipal Court, Franklin Park, Dorchester, and Mattapan will bear left onto the eastbound temporary roadway. Eastbound right or left turns to South Street in either direction will not be permitted. Right and left turns at Washington Street will be open to traffic. Generally speaking, north and southbound movements along Washington Street and South Street will remain as they are today for this phase of construction. The southbound exit of Forest Hills Street into Shea Circle will remain closed to ensure the safety of the traveling public.

Any motorist bound for Shea Circle, West Roxbury Municipal Court, Dorchester, Franklin Park, etc., accidentally bearing to the right and finding themselves on South Street is advised to turn left on Ukraine Way, left on Hyde Park Avenue, and turn right on the Arborway surface road immediately after the LAZ Parking Lot in Forest Hills.

See a traffic map for conditions set for implementation over the weekend of May 16.

Pedestrians traveling from points east of the project area will traverse Shea Circle at the existing crosswalks provided. A sidewalk will be provided along the northern edge of the temporary roadway adjacent to the Arborway Yard MBTA bus facility to provide a connection to Forest Hills.

Signalized crosswalks will be present on the north and west sides of the intersection of Washington Street and the temporary roadway. Signalized pedestrian crossings will also be provided on the northern and western sides of South Street and temporary roadway intersection. Existing signalized crosswalks south of the Overpass on South Street and Washington Street will be maintained during this phase of construction.

As shown on the pedestrian map, the midblock crosswalk on New Washington Street is now closed. For your safety, please do not cross at this location.

All work is subject to weather conditions. For more information, please contact Jim Kersten at 857.368.9041 or email.
