J. Horace McFarland was a prolific publisher (primarily concerning horticulture of the rose cultivar), environmentalist, and a leading proponent of the “City Beautiful Movement” in the United States. He frequently emphasized in print the importance of the Arnold Arboretum Living Collections and public parkland, and was a frequent correspondent with Charles Sprague Sargent.
