document the work and research of Arboretum staff members and includes papers of the directors, botanical illustrators, propagators, plant explorers, researchers, and associates.
include annual reports, minutes, long-range plans, mission statements, course descriptions, publications, plant records, plant lists, maps, weather data, and in-house publications.
includes letters that were written and received by staff members from the 1880s to the 1960s. Most letters focus on plant accessions, plant exploration, plant identification, plant requests, and taxonomy. Correspondence from famous horticulturists affiliated with botanical gardens and arboreta, and from government agencies, and active gardeners and amateur horticulturists are represented.

The archives are also the repository of a small number of other horticultural and botanical collections such as records of the Atkins Institution, Bussey Institution, Chestnut Blight Commission, Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts, Massachusetts Horticultural Society, International Lilac Society.
