Pioneering plant exploration and collection

Through nearly 150 years of plant exploration, the Arnold Arboretum has assembled its renowned living collections. Responding to global change and habitat destruction, the Arboretum is building on its legacy by accelerating efforts to collect, preserve, and study biodiversity through the Campaign for the Living Collections. This year, Arboretum staff journeyed to Japan in spring and fall, and participated in the first North American expedition of the North America-China Plant Exploration Consortium, gathering species across ten states in the Appalachians. Our decade-long campaign targets some 400 species of plants, many of conservation concern, from wild populations across the temperate zone.
