Herman Howard joined the Arnold Arboretum staff in 1929 and, with the exception of 3 years served with the armed forces (1943-1945), spent the next 38 years working as the Arboretum’s unofficial photographer. In his official capacity as Assistant Horticulturist under Donald Wyman and Alfred Fordham, Howard was responsible for checking, mapping and labeling the plants in the living collections.
In July 1970, Howard retired from the Arnold Arboretum to accept the full-time position as Horticulturist at Heritage Plantation in Sandwich, Massachusetts. He retired from Heritage Plantation in 1977.
Howard’s decades of Arboretum photography can be also viewed in issues of Arnoldia from that period. The Archive Collection of the Arnold Arboretum also holds Howard’s collection of Ektachrome transparencies (Series K), 1952-1970.
